Doula Work

What is a Doula ?

The word Doula is greek and means ” Woman who serves”.
It was coined in 1976  by the american anthropologist Dana Raphael who was a strong advocate for Women  (and Birthing person) to be assisted by non-medical care-giver “Doula” during and after chilbirth.
In ancient tradition there was at least 2 women assisting the birth : the Midwife, there to assess the progression of labour and ensure the safety of the mother and the baby throughout. And the Doula, behind the woman, holding and comforting her.
Nowadays, a Doula is defined as an educated professional who provide non-medical emotional, physical and practical support and guide you during pregnancy, birth and the post-partum period.

Benefits of Doula

The largest and most recent study on continous labor support found that in comparison with people having no continous support, people having continous support provided by someone being neither a member of the hospital staff nor someone in the person’s social network were :

  • 28% less likely to have a cesarean section
  • 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin to speed up labor
  • 9% less likely to use any pain medication
  • 34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience negatively
